Indian Skimmer: Discovering the Wonders of a Rare and Endangered Bird Species


The Indian Skimmer (Rynchops albicollis) is a unique and beautiful bird species that is found in India, Nepal, and Bangladesh. They are expert fliers and can hover over the water surface while scanning for fish.


These birds are found near rivers, lakes, and estuaries, where they breed and feed. They are exclusively fish-eaters and can catch fish up to 10 cm long. They hunt by flying low over the water surface and dipping their lower mandible in the water to catch fish. They are known to be social birds and usually breed in colonies of up to 20 pairs.


However, the Indian Skimmer is facing many threats that are putting their survival at risk. One of the biggest threats to these birds is habitat loss due to the destruction of riverbanks and wetlands. These areas are being developed for human settlements, agriculture, and infrastructure, which is causing a decline in the Indian Skimmer's natural habitats.
